Text: “But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ is not risen. But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep”
(1 Cor. 15:13, 20).

Introduction: Welcome all and congratulate them for celebrating another Easter Sunday on earth. We celebrate Easter today because of our hope in the resurrection of believers at the end of the age. We believe we will resurrect after our death and departure from this world because Christ has resurrected.

In the early Church, it seemed as if the subject of bodily resurrection, especially that of Christ was posing some problems to the believers. Realising this problem and the attendant danger, Paul took time to explain to them the truths surrounding this important topic in 1 Corinthians 15. From verse 29, Paul seemed to point out the fact that they believed in resurrection, otherwise, they would be foolish to be submitting themselves to be baptised on behalf of their dead relations (I. Cor 15:29). In all, Paul succeeded in explaining to them the importance of Christ’s resurrection to the Christian faith.

Today as we celebrate Easter, what are we to learn from the resurrection of Christ? There are two lessons I want to place before us. First, resurrection of Jesus Christ as we celebrate Easter reminds us that Christians are overcomers over death and sin. It is in Christ’s resurrection that we have our victory. That is why Paul declared boldly, “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory? (1 Corinthians 15:54, 55). This victory is only for Christians who have been saved from their sins. In other words, Easter celebration is only meant for Christians. Therefore, as we celebrate today, are you a Christian, an overcomer in the Lord Jesus Christ or a mere Church goer with sin still ruling over you?

Second, Easter reminds us that resurrection is sure for everyone after death. This resurrection is in two ways, life eternal and death eternal. This is echoed by Daniel in the Old Testament, “And at that time your people shall be delivered, Every one who is found written in the book. And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, Some to everlasting life, Some to shame and everlasting contempt” (Daniel 12:1, 2).

This truth is also affirmed by John in the revelation given to him by Jesus on the Island of Patmos, “And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:12, 15).

Beloved, as we celebrate today, we are being reminded that a day of judgement awaits us when all the works we have done on earth will be visited and judged. As a Christian, how will your resurrection be – everlasting life, or shame and everlasting contempt? Therefore Easter, is an opportunity for you to re-examine your life as a Christian politician, civil servant, clergyman, businessman and businesswoman to see whether or not you will be raised with Christ on the last day.

Conclusion: Beloved, will your work qualify you on the Day of Judgement to be raised into life eternal? You can begin to make the amend today. Today is your day of salvation. Tomorrow may be too late. Jesus has died for your sin and raised for your justification. What you only need is to accept your true position as a sinner. Confess your sins and Christ will forgive you. He will give you the power to live a victorious life and at the end of your life, he will raise you to eternal life.
