“Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “sit here while I go over there and pray”. He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled – “Matthew 2636-37.

Everywhere in the world, gardens are created for different purposes. There are zoological and Biological gardens. Visitors come to such gardens to behold the beauty of nature. They serve as places for relaxation and also as tourist attraction. However, the garden of Gethsemane, a name that means oil press, may have been an olive orchard on the slopes of the Mount of Olives. It served as campsite for Jesus and his disciples while he was attending the Passover festival. Nevertheless, Jesus felt a desperate need for companionship in prayer, and so he asked Peter, James and John to support him at this very important time. On the mount of transfiguration these three had seen Jesus’ glory and had fallen face down before the voice of God.

 

The garden of Gethsemane was not a fun-seeking spot for Jesus, rather, it was of serious prayer. As he prayed, Jesus was not pleading with the forces of the universe; he was speaking to his father. His anguish of the events confronting him was so great that he asked whether the father had another plan that would not involve such suffering. But even as he made his plea, he expressed his submission to the Father’s will. Prayer must always be subject to the Father’s will. Because of Christ submission, the triumph of Calvary was accomplished in the garden of Gethsemane. Jesus prayed thrice, requesting for the same thing. But the request was always subject to the will of the Father.

 

In the book of Genesis, God planted a garden for the habitation of human beings (Gen. 2:8). This gift of a garden is a symbol of God’s love for it provided a framework in which God could train human beings and gives them the reference points they would need to face the vast new universe that lay around them. The garden was not a place of ignorance intended to keep human beings away from science and learning. Rather, it was a place of initiation into life. The garden contained all that they needed to learn at first.

 

God placed the man he had made in this well-watered garden of Eden to work it and take care of it (Gen 2:15). To enable the man feels comfortable, God made a suitable companion for Adam with whom to keep relationship. However, the opportunity of the garden was abused when the first couple fell to the temptation of the devil. The devil’s attack in the form of a serpent was successful, and the woman gave in to what 1 John 2:16 describes as the lust of the flesh.

 

The redemptive work of Jesus Christ was important to bring human kind back to God after the fall in the garden of Eden. The garden of Gethsemane provided a perfect scenery for Jesus Christ to keep watch and pray. While the first man succumbed to the antics of the devil in the garden of Eden, Jesus prevailed over the cravings of the body, Jesus prayed and so passed the test and stayed within the will of the father even to death.

 

The three disciples who accompanied Jesus to the garden of Gethsemane, on their part, failed to pray, rather, they found the garden as an abode for sleep, no wonder, that they could not stand the test of faith in the face of persecution. When Christ was eventually arrested, he felt fulfilled, while the disciples went under ground.

 

Life is a garden in which every individual has come to inhabit. Some people see life as an amusement or leisure park where worldly pleasures is their trademark. Some people view life as a place for sight seeing, so they are like tourists. While some others have a perspective of doing serious service to God and humanity.

 

The garden of the gardens is illustrated in the seventh of the ‘I am’ sayings of Jesus Christ in John 15:1, ‘ I am the true vine’, If Jesus is a vine, then the father is the gardener and Christians are the branches of the vine. It is this spiritual garden that every one reading this must endeavour to come into.
